This weekend, our team had the privilege of visiting Nyota Asubui Children’s Orphanage, a beacon of hope nestled just 500 meters from the sea. The orphanage, under the care of Ken—a remarkable individual who balances his duties as a "boda" motorcycle taxi driver with his passion for child welfare—offers more than just shelter. Together with his wife and a dedicated colleague, Ken has created a safe haven where children from challenging backgrounds find joy, education, and a sense of community.

Building Futures on Foundations of Care
The orphanage, currently in the final stages of construction thanks to the efforts of Italian architect Mario Cutuli and funding from the Maria Grazia Cutuli Foundation, is designed to be more than just a shelter. Maria Grazia Cutuli, a revered Italian journalist, tragically lost her life while reporting in Afghanistan. In her honor, the foundation named after her supports initiatives that empower and educate, embodying her legacy of making a significant impact. On Saturdays, the orphanage transforms into a vibrant hub where children can swim, play football, and enjoy meals together—a simple yet profound offering that nurtures body and spirit. Additionally, the team provides sanitary products for young women and educational support, with funds raised to support university education for promising students.

Educational Sessions that Empower
During our visit, we were deeply affected by a session conducted by Janet, a trained nurse, who taught over 20 girls about sexual health, reproduction, and women's rights. Ken shared poignant stories of several young women losing their lives due to early pregnancies and unsafe abortions, emphasizing the significance of these sessions. It's inspiring to witness such empowerment, as these young individuals gain the knowledge and support needed to tackle life's challenges.

A Refuge for Many
Nyota Asubui extends its care beyond children, offering refuge to over 20 women suffering from gender-based violence. The comprehensive support system includes counseling services, where heartbreaking stories from the children's home environments are met with compassionate responses.

Upcoming Changes in Child Welfare Policy
In line with recent reforms, the Kenyan government has announced plans to close all orphanages and children's homes within the next eight years. The aim is to integrate children back into community settings and foster homes, believing that such environments provide a more familial atmosphere and better developmental outcomes for children. This change in legislation leaves the newly built orphanage purposeless, however here's where we at Ocean Sole can help!
Ocean Sole’s Commitment
We are exploring how we can support the community in repurposing the orphanage by providing mentorship, up-skilling, art and activities. Our goal is to create opportunities that equip these young individuals with practical and life skills, ensuring they are prepared for the future. By fostering an environment of learning and empowerment, we hope to contribute positively to their development and long-term success.
Our Pledge to Support and Educate
We are dedicated to working alongside Nyota Asubui to ensure that it remains a hub for community support, even as it transitions away from being an orphanage. Through mentorship, skills training, and educational programs, we aim to make a lasting impact, empowering the children and women who rely on this space.
Through these efforts, we hope to inspire a wave of change that ripples throughout the community, fostering an environment where every child can thrive.
