Community Garden
What began as a neglected piece of land, littered with rubbish and overrun by weeds, has transformed into the thriving heart of our community. One of the Ocean Mamaz, seeing the potential in this forgotten plot, generously offered it to spearhead a movement towards better health and nutrition. Recognizing the stark food security challenges—where 100% of our Mamaz group reported significant stress over food, subsisting on a sparse diet of mainly maize meal and spinach—we launched the Community Garden project.
Mission
At Ocean Mamaz Garden, our mission is to unite our community through the principles of permaculture and regenerative agriculture. We aim to teach and train these sustainable practices to local groups, including fishermen, fostering a shift from reef to roots. By producing and selling soil amendments such as compost, leachate, and coco peat, we create economic opportunities for our Mamaz. All sales are reinvested into the garden, ensuring continuous growth and community empowerment, nurturing both our land and our people.
Vision
Our vision at Ocean Mamaz Garden is to cultivate a self-sustaining community that thrives on the principles of permaculture and regenerative agriculture. As an integral part of the Reef to Roots initiative, we aim to create a seamless connection between marine conservation and terrestrial sustainability. We aspire to be a model of environmental stewardship and social equity, where local families and fishermen are empowered to nourish themselves, manage natural resources wisely, and contribute to a healthier planet.
